Lady Pioneers Fall to Westcliff, Look to Regroup for Upcoming Matches
After an impressive performance against Providence Christian, the Lady Pioneers faced a formidable opponent in Westcliff University, who currently hold the #2 spot in the CAL-PAC standings. The Pioneers entered the match without key player Judy Vallier, #10, who was sidelined due to a concussion sustained in the previous game.
The first half saw the Pioneers' defense hold strong, allowing just two shots on target, both handled confidently by goalkeeper #1 Jayleen Casillas. However, Westcliff eventually found a breakthrough in the 31st minute. A long ball over the top split two PUC defenders, and the Warriors' forward took advantage, heading the ball over Casillas to give Westcliff a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers struggled to create offensive opportunities, registering only one shot in the first half.
In the second half, PUC came out with renewed energy, managing two shots in the opening 10 minutes, one of which was on target. However, their momentum was short-lived as another long ball over the top caused problems for the Pioneer defense. Westcliff capitalized once again, scoring their second goal in the 66th minute. Just six minutes later, the Warriors extended their lead with a third and final goal, putting the game out of reach.
Despite the loss, the Pioneer defense put in a strong effort, facing 16 shots and forcing Casillas to make six saves. The Warriors' ground attack struggled to penetrate PUC's solid defensive structure, but the two long balls over the top proved to be the difference in the match. Offensively, the Pioneers had a tough outing, managing only one shot on target throughout the game.
The Lady Pioneers will aim to bounce back quickly as they prepare for two important road matchups against Soka and La Sierra. They hope to build on the defensive resilience shown in this match and find more success on the attacking side.
