PUC Men’s Soccer Holds Strong in Season Opener Against UC Merced
The PUC Men's Soccer team kicked off their season in a hard-fought match against the visiting UC Merced Bobcats, who came into the game ranked 26th in NAIA. Despite the challenging opponent, the Pioneers put up a commendable fight, keeping the game much closer than the rankings suggested.
By the end of the first half, the match was still up for grabs, with PUC managing two shots, one on target, while the Bobcats took four shots, two of which tested the Pioneers' defense. The most dangerous moment of the first half came in the 32nd minute when a corner from UC Merced almost caught PUC off guard. However, defender #10 Zachary DaValle made a crucial goal-line clearance, preventing what looked like a sure goal and keeping the match level.
The second half played out similarly, with the Pioneers' defense remaining structured and causing significant problems for the UC Merced attack. The Bobcats' clearest opportunity came in the 73rd minute when PUC's goalkeeper committed a foul in the box, awarding Merced a penalty. #9 Daniel Borges stepped up to take the spot-kick, but PUC's goalkeeper #1 Andres Becerra came up huge with a brilliant outstretched save, keeping the game at 0-0.
Despite the resilient defense, UC Merced finally broke through in the 80th minute. After a deflected shot by Borges, #11 Jesus Enriquez found space for an open header, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
In the dying moments of the match, PUC fought back with determination. Their best chance came in the final 60 seconds, as #6 Edwin Zabala broke through the Merced defense following an intelligent over-the-top pass from #21 Mickyas Beyene. Zabala's initial shot was saved, but he quickly fired off another, only to be denied once more. Despite their efforts, the Pioneers couldn't find the equalizer, falling 1-0 in their season opener.
Although the Pioneers start their season with a loss, there is much to be optimistic about. The PUC backline looks solid, and their defense, anchored by freshman center backs #4 John Bravo and #23 David Villanueva, combines speed and height, proving to be a formidable pairing. Wingbacks #13 Hunter Valerio and #10 Zachary DaValle, both veterans, continue to deliver strong performances and know exactly what head coach Granados expects from them.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back in their next match on October 3rd at 3:00 PM as they take on Providence Christian.
