Pioneers Battle Hard in 2-1 Loss to #19 Westcliff Despite Playing with 10 Men

Following a dominant win over Providence Christian, the PUC Pioneers faced their toughest challenge yet, taking on Westcliff University, ranked #19 in the nation and #1 in California (NAIA). In what was expected to be a defensive test, the Pioneers showed early on that they were up for the challenge.

PUC opened the match with solid defensive organization, much like their previous performances against UC Merced and Providence Christian. In the first 20 minutes, the Pioneers outshot the Warriors 3-1, demonstrating their ability to counter-attack effectively while maintaining their defensive structure. It seemed like another close match was on the horizon.

However, the game took a sharp turn in the 22nd minute when PUC #24 Dylan Thomas was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. The Warriors quickly took advantage, scoring just four minutes later to take a 1-0 lead.

Despite being down to 10 men, the Pioneers refused to back down. In the 34th minute, their resilience paid off when they earned a penalty after a foul inside the 18-yard box. #21 Mickyas Beyene coolly converted the penalty for his third of the season, bringing PUC level at 1-1, defying the odds.

As the second half began, Westcliff's numerical advantage began to show. The Warriors fired 11 shots in total, 10 of which were on target. PUC's goalkeeper, Andres Becerra, rose to the occasion, making nine crucial saves to keep the Pioneers in the game. Unfortunately, in the 57th minute, a cross from Jordan Di Lonardo took a deflection off Finn Jutner, sending Becerra the wrong way and giving Westcliff a 2-1 lead.

Despite their best efforts, the Pioneers couldn't find another equalizer. The team showed clear frustration at the final whistle, knowing they had pushed one of the top teams in the nation to the limit, even while playing with 10 men for much of the match.

PUC will now look to bounce back with two important away games on the horizon against Soka and La Sierra, hoping to build on the resilience and fight they showed against Westcliff.
