Date: August 3, 2023

As the anticipation builds for the upcoming soccer season, the PUC Pioneers teams are gearing up to hit the field with renewed energy and determination. Ahead of the 2023-2024 season, we caught up with Head Coach Shane Shelton to discuss the highlights from last year, the team's preparations, and his expectations for the upcoming campaign for both the Men's and Women's soccer teams.

Q: Coach Shelton, the 2022-2023 season saw some remarkable achievements for both the Men's and Women's teams. Can you reflect on some of the highlights you had as a coach for each team last year?

Coach Shelton: Without a doubt, the highlight for the coaching staff was witnessing the strong bonds that formed within each team. Soccer is not just about winning games; it's about creating a family environment where players support and lift each other up. The camaraderie and unity that developed amongst the players were truly special and rewarding to witness.

Q: As we approach the new season, what are you looking forward to the most from each team?

Coach Shelton: Above all, we are looking forward to watching the teams play. The hard work and dedication put in during the off-season have us excited about the potential each squad holds this year. We want to see them showcase their skills, passion, and commitment on the field.

Q: It sounds like both teams are well-prepared for the new season. How do you think each team is better set up for success compared to the previous year?

Coach Shelton: The winter and spring seasons were very productive for both the Men's and Women's teams. Additionally, we have talented new players joining our ranks this year. The combination of experienced returnees and incoming freshmen has raised the overall quality of each squad. As a coaching staff, we believe that the teams are better positioned for success this season.

Q: As the season approaches, what are some challenges you are facing right now?

Coach Shelton: Time is always a challenge in the pre-season. With our opening games just around the corner, the priority is to get everyone on the same page quickly and efficiently. Ensuring that the players understand their roles, strategies, and team dynamics is our primary focus as we head into the new season.

Q: Can you share with us any standout players we should keep an eye on for both the Men's and Women's teams?

Coach Shelton: Certainly! On the Women's team, pay close attention to Judy Vallier and Buks Babatunde. They were instrumental in our success during the latter part of last season. This year, with the experience of playing together in the back, we expect them to take on even more prominent roles in leading the defense.

For the Men's team, keep an eye on Kevin Gill and David Rodriguez. They both had an impressive winter and spring, building on a strong fall season. We anticipate them making significant strides and contributing immensely to the team's success this fall.

Q: Finally, any predictions for the 2023-2024 season?

Coach Shelton: As always, our primary goal is to secure a playoff spot. The teams are hungry for success, and we are ready to put forth our best efforts to achieve that objective. With the determination, talent, and camaraderie that exists within the squads, we are optimistic about the season and are excited to represent the PUC Pioneers on the field.

As the interview concluded, Coach Shelton's passion and enthusiasm for the game were palpable. With a strengthened roster and a clear goal in mind, the PUC Pioneers Men's and Women's soccer teams are set to blaze a trail of success in the 2023-2024 season.
