REDDING, Calif.- The Pioneers secured their second road win of the season in a dominant three set win against the Simpson University Redhawks, 3-0.
The first set was a tight affair, with both teams trading points back and forth, but it would prove to be the Pioneers who would take control of the set and take control of the game led by strong play from Morgan Spencer (SO/Kailua, HI) and Amanda Loeffler (SR/Hilo Town, HI). The Pioneers looked strong overall, tallying 5 out of 8 total service aces in the first set. The home side was never able to overcome the strong, offensive play from the Pioneers and PUC took the first set, 25-18.
The Pioneers looked to continue their good form to start off the second set, but the Redhawks were able to take advantage of back to back attack errors early in the set and jump to a four point lead. The Pioneers were able to respond midway through the set, which would stay competitive to the end. PUC was able to go on a late 6-1 run to come back from an 18-21 deficit and win the set, 25-22.
With a chance to finish off the game, the Pioneers looked to make quick work of the Redhawks. Like the second set, the Redhawks came out strong in the third set, jumping to an early lead. The third set had several lead changes, neither team was able to run away with the set. Like the rest of the match, neither team was able to establish total dominance in play, providing an entertaining game from a neutral perspective. It as the Pioneers who would claim the set, 25-21 to win the game, 3-0.
Amanda Loeffler led the Pioneers on the day with 11 kills. Morgan Spencer contributed 8 kills and Lauren Purdom (SR/Murrieta, CA) added 7. Loeffler was able to perform well on both offense and defense, leading the Pioneers with 12 digs. Chace Rogers (JR/Bakersfield, CA) added 11 digs and Morgan Spencer contributed 7. Hannah Clarke (JR/Glendora, CA) led the team with 19 assists and Tiana Whitington added 13 on the day.
The Pioneers will continue their road trip in Southern California, looking to add another conference win against rivals, La Sierra University Friday Oct. 13 at 1:00 PM in Riverside, CA
