VALLEJO, Calif.- The Pioneers travelled to Vallejo to face California State University-Maritime, and in a close match, could not find an equalizing goal, falling 2-1.
PUC began the match with impressive attacking play, threatening the Keelhauler's net on multiple occasions. The Pioneers were rewarded for their efforts with 22 minutes remaining in the half, as prolific forward Nathan Diaz (FR/Madera, CA) added another goal to his season tally, capitalizing on a good pass from Angel Pena to give PUC the 1-0 lead. However, the hosts came right back, equalizing a few minutes later to tie the game 1-1.
PUC continued to press for a second goal, and came close on a number of occasions. Striker David Miongo (FR/Silver Spring, MD) saw his effort hit the post, and Geraldy Kumontoy (JR/Manado, Indonesia ) had an effort miss wide left. The Pioneers were able to possess the ball and maintain pressure throughout the half, generating chances on the Keelhauler net, but were unable to find a second before the half, and the sides went into the break level.
The second half was a competitive affair, but both defenses were able to restrain the attackers from generating consistent offense. The Pioneers put in a disciplined defensive display, catching Maritime's offense with timely offensive traps. However, the Keelhaulers were able to break through with 20 minutes remaining in the half, scoring a momentum shifting goal and jumping from behind to take the 2-1 lead. PUC was unable to find the equalizing goal, and the Pioneers lost, dropping to 0-4-1 in the conference.
