The Pioneers secured their first points of the season in a goal fest, tying with the Providence Christian College Sea Beggars 4-4.
The game was destined to be an exciting one, and Pioneer's forward Ubaldo Hureta Bueno nearly opened up the scoring in the first minute. The Pioneers would soon find themselves behind 15 minutes in as Sea Beggars forward Josh Ault finished to put the home side up. They would respond however, capitalizing on poor defense by the Sea Beggars, forcing the home team to concede a penalty kick. Nathan Diaz continued his talismanic form on the season, finishing from the spot to equalize the score. The Pioneers were unable to grab the lead, however, and the Sea Beggars grabbed a goal to reassume the lead. The half went from bad to worse for PUC as Josh Ault got his second of the game from the penalty spot. The Pioneers were able to respond to the two goal deficit however, threatening the home side's goal constantly and pressuring the Sea Beggar's defense. PUC were soon rewarded for their attacking intent with a headed goal from Hedgar Taylor, assisted by Geraldy Kumontoy, bringing the Pioneers within one goal. The Sea Beggars were able to add a fourth three minutes before halftime. Josh Ault was able to complete his hattrick in the first half, an impressive feat.
The Pioneers had their work cut out for them, down two goals at half, 4-2, and responded well to the deficit. It took only 6 minutes for Pioneers attacker Geraldy Kumontoy to find the back of the net from an assist by Ruben Quintero. There would be yet another penalty kick in this match, and Hedgar Taylor made no mistake in the 54th minute, securing his brace from the penalty spot and evening the score at 4-4. This is how the match would finish, and the Pioneers were able to pick up their first points of the season.
The Pioneers will look to build up on this positive result on the road Thursday, October 5 at 6:00 p.m. against California State University-Maritime in Vallejo, California.
