ANGWIN, Calif.- Ending the first week of school on a high-note and avenging last night's loss; the PUC Pioneers took home their third victory of the season. After dominating in the first two sets, struggling in the third, and making a phenomenal comeback in the fourth set the Pioneers bring their season to 3-3 Cal-Pac and 3-6 overall.
Taking advantage of the home court crowd the Pioneers took an early lead 7-3 with help from #1 Lauren Purdom (SR/Murrieta, CA) and her tone-setting kill. The Pioneers displayed excellent teamwork, stretching their lead 16-11, 22-18, and finally 25-18 after a kill from #6 Morgan Spencer (SO/Kailua, HI).
Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the second set had a different start. The UAV Pioneers came out in the second set on fire, making PUC trail by four, with the scoreboard reading 4-8. UAV's fire was soon extinguished by PUC after going on a 4-0 run, which continued until the end of the second set 25-22.
Early in the third set fans were excited as it looked like PUC would walk away with a three set sweep. The PUC Pioneers took an early lead 7-3 after back-to-back aces from #9 Tiana Whittington (FR/San Gabriel, CA). After a comfortable four-point lead, PUC was surprised as UAV battled back tying the score at 20. To the Pioneers surprise, UAV took the victory in the third set 23-25, forcing the match into a fourth set.
UAV fought for the victory, as the Pioneers trailed behind for most of the fourth set. After an ace by PUC's #8 Amanda Loeffler (SR/Hilo Town, HI), the Pioneers were only down by one. With the stakes high and PUC on their A-game, Amanda Loeffler came in with a kill that took the lead with PUC up by 2, 23-21. The PUC Pioneers and their fans were able to hold their heads high, after PUC took the win in the fourth, 27-25.
Amanda Loeffler and Morgan Spencer led for the Pioneers with 15 kills apiece. Lauren Purdom added 13 kills, while Chace Roger tallied 16 digs, and Hannah Clarke (JR/Glendora, CA) finished with 28 assists.
Number five, Chelsea Phillips led UAV with 15 kills, five digs and one assist. UAV gave PUC a run for their money and were able to put up a total of 8 team blocks and a total of 51 kills.
The Pioneers return to the court on Wednesday, October 4 at 6:00 pm in a face-off against Menlo College.
