The Pioneer's volleyball team looked to pick up their second win of their road trip in Arizona as they faced off against the Embry-Riddle Eagles. Despite two close sets, the Pioneer lost 13-25, 23-25, 22-25.
The first set started out rocky for the Pioneers. Despite good early offensive play, the Eagles jumped out to a lead, and easily took the set 13-25.
In the second set, PUC looked to gain a foothold in the game, and rebounded well, playing the Eagles to a competitive set. Midway through the set, the Pioneers jumped to a lead, as a kill by Kristen Murray (JR/Simi Valley , CA) put the Pioneers ahead 14-13. Both team exchanged points, but the Eagles were able to prevail, winning a closely contested set 23-25.
The home side controlled much of the third set as the visiting Pioneers searched for a way back into the match. Embry-Riddle gained a solid lead halfway through the third set, but the Pioneers, inspired by a five point serving run by Morgan Spencer (SO/Kailua, HI), fought their way back, closing the gap to 22-23. The Eagles were able to hold off the late Pioneer's surge however, winning the set 25-22 and taking all three sets to win the match.
Morgan Spencer lead the game with seven kills, and Lauren Purdom (SR/Murrieta, CA) and Amanda Loeffler (SR/Hilo Town, HI) followed with six and five kills respectively. Chace Rogers (JR/Bakersfield, CA) tallied a game high 14 digs, while Tiana Whitington provided 16 assists.
Pioneers volleyball returns home on Friday, September 29, as PUC takes on UC Merced at 2:00 pm.
