MESA, Arizona- In an intense five set game against Benedictine at Mesa Redhawks, the Pioneers were able to secure their second win of the season improving to 2-1 in Cal Pac play, and 2-4 overall.
From the first serve of the game until the final whistle blow, fans were on the edge of their seats for one of the more exciting matches of the season. The first set opened up with a pronounced kill by Lauren Purdom (SR/Murrieta, CA). However, in a riveting back-and-forth set, the Pioneers found themselves behind six points as the scoreboard read 19-25.
Despite the initial loss, the Pioneers fought hard in set two. The Pioneers faced a minor setback as they trailed five points early on in the set. Luckily, a game changing tip from Amanda Loeffler (SR/Hilo Town, HI), brought the score to 19-22, giving the Pioneers momentum. The Pioneers won by two after being tied at 24 and 25, for a 27-25 narrow victory against the Redhawks.
Unfortunately, for the Pioneers the third set was not as promising as they suffered a 9-25 loss. Throughout the game, the Pioneers hunger for victory was never in doubt, as they would reign victorious in the fourth set 25-20.
Heading into the deciding fifth set, both the Pioneers and the Redhawks brought their A-game. During an intense fifth set, the Redhawks passing began to breakdown, and the Pioneers were able to secure a slim 15-13 win.
Leading the way for the Pioneers was Amanda Loeffler with 18 kills, 20 digs and three service aces. Other standout players included Lauren Purdom with eight kills and seven block assists and Karisa Carlson (JR/Ripon, CA) contributing eight kills.
The Pioneers look to their third win of the season as they take the court again tomorrow night against the Embry Riddle Eagles; first serve is at 8:00 pm!
