SAN RAFAEL, Calif.-The Pioneers travelled to the Bay to face non-conference side Dominican University, searching for their first win of the season.
The Penguins notched the first goal of the game in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a goalkeeping error to give the home team an early advantage. PUC equalized midway through the first half, as Nathan Diaz (FR/Madera, CA) provided a clinical finish in front of an open net, notching his second goal of the season.
Dominican retook the lead in the 34th minute, as Penguin's forward Wilson Briggs rounded off an individual effort with a near post finish. The Pioneers were on the back foot for most of the half, but remained within striking distance of the hosts at the break.
The Pioneers weathered a barrage of shots from the home team in the second half, but were unable to muster many shots on frame. Nathan Diaz managed to fire off his second shot of the game, but saw his effort sail over the bar. Keeper Darian Roberts (FR/Gastonia, NC) came up big throughout the match as the Pioneers looked to stay in the game, saving 7 of the Penguins 10 efforts on frame. PUC continued to look for an opportunity to grab an equalizer on the counter, while keeping the match close. At the final whistle, the Pioneers held the Penguins scoreless in the second half, but were unable to draw level, and the match ended 2-1 to Dominican University.
The Pioneers will look for their first win in their conference opener on September 22, at home against Embry-Riddle University.
