Angwin, Calif. - Women's volleyball hosted Providence Christian College in their home opener for what would be an exciting five set victory for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers and the Sea Beggars opened up set one battling back and forth to an 11-11 tied game. As set one continued, the Pioneers began to find their rhythm. With back-to-back kills by Amanda Loeffler (SR/Hilo Town, HI) and Morgan Spencer (SO/Kailua, HI), the Pioneers took a 20-15 lead. Unable to ride out their momentum, the Sea Beggars went on a 7-2 run, tying the game at 22-22. Another two kills from Amanda Loeffler forced the Sea Beggars to take a timeout with Pioneers leading 24-22. The Pioneers were able to take set one 25-23 with a closing kill by Kristen Murray (JR/Simi Valley , CA).
The Pioneers and Sea Beggars tied the score six times to start the second set. With a string of Pioneer hitting errors and two quick kills by the Sea Beggars' Melanie Balaban, the Pioneers were forced to take a timeout down 10-15. Plagued with hitting errors, set two was easily closed out by the Sea Beggars 25-17.
The Pioneers started set three on a 6-0 run and never looked back, taking a 2-1 lead over the Sea Beggars with a set 25-14 victory.
The Sea Beggars answered back in set four with a pronounced 25-15 finish, pushing the game to five.
Heading into the fifth set, the Sea Beggars forced a court side switch with a slim 8-7 lead. The Lady Pioneers responded with two quick points on a kill from Kristen Murray and an ace from Tiana Whittington (FR/San Gabriel, CA) to make it 9-8.
With a 12-11 lead, the Pioneers closed set five on dominating kills from Lauren Purdom (SR/Murrieta, CA) and Amanda Loeffler to take home their first league win. The Pioneers improve to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in Cal Pac play.
The Pioneers were led by the stellar performance of Amanda Loeffler who posted 23 kills, 17 digs, and two service aces. Chace Rogers (JR/Bakersfield, CA) tallied a season high 28 digs, while Tiana Whittington contributed an impressive 27 assits while running a 6-2 offense.
The Lady Pioneers will continue onto their second match of their two game home stretch tomorrow Saturday September 16, against La Sierra University for an 8:15 start time.
