ANGWIN, CA- Despite being faced with a little rain, the Pioneers men's soccer team gave their all in a match-up against William Jessup on Thursday afternoon. William Jessup University was able to overcome the Pioneers, 5-0, and gain their third win of the season, bringing the home team's record 0-2, overall.
Barely nine minutes into the game with the clock reading, 8:45, William Jessup was able to score their first goal of the game. The shot was kicked in by senior, Aaron Roudebush, with an assist from teammate Connor Entz.
The Pioneers and William Jessup battled it out for the next 30 minutes of play. The Pioneers were able to get in a corner kick and shot on goal that was just shy of the net from Michael Andrianarijaona (SR/Angwin, CA). Unfortunately for the Pioneers, Adolfo Guzman gave William Jessup their second goal of the night at 35:32. Less than five minutes later with the clock at 40:02, Paul Anderson scored a goal, brining William Jessup into the half with a 3-0 lead.
Opening up the second half, the Pioneers were met with a mishap. After having their goal overcrowded and faced with intense defense, the Pioneers were forced to let the ball in on their own net; extending William Jessup's lead, 4-0.
Following the accident, the Pioneers were able to get back into the grove of things, with two crucial saves by goalie Darian Roberts (NA/Gastonia, NC). The remaining minutes of play were filled with the Pioneers displaying teamwork in attempting to set a new tone to the game. In defiance of their efforts, William Jessup was able to find the net with 13 minutes remaining on the clock, after Christian Guzman scored off a penalty kick.
With the Pioneers season still in the early stages, PUC looks on to the remaining games with high hopes of reigning victorious.
The Pioneers hit the road to Atherton, California next Thursday, in a face-off against No. 22 Menlo College. Kick-off starts at 4:00 p.m.
