Angwin, Ca- Men's Soccer opened up their season at home against the Multnomah University Lions. Despite being a non-conference affair, the Pioneers looked to take a step forward in their first action of the season.
The Multnomah University Lions opened up with strong, attacking soccer and got their reward early in the match with a goal. Pioneers' keeper Darian Roberts (NA/Gastonia, NC) came up with several strong saves as the Pioneers began to work their way into possession and back into the game. The visitors came close to doubling their lead when a free-kick just outside the box hit the upright. The Pioneers equalized close to half on a counter attack rounded off by a great square pass. Nathan Diaz (FR/Madera, CA) finished the move with an assist from Angel Pena (JR/Oxnard, CA). The game was all square, 1-1 at halftime.
The Lions opened up strong delivering a powerful header that beat goalkeeper Darian Roberts and gave the Lions a 2-1 lead. The visitors came close to getting a third but we're stopped by a strong save from Roberts. The Lions extended their lead a few moments later to 3-1. The visitors would go on to increase their goal tally to four after a defensive error. The Pioneers remained persistent, pressing high and possessing in the opposing half of the field. This came at a cost however, as the Lions got their 5th on the counter.
The Pioneers were able to lessen the deficit and grabbed their second goal of the day after scrappy, offensive play was rewarded by a well worked finish by Christian Paz. However, the visitors added a sixth and put the match to rest from a free-kick. The game ended with a final score of 7-2.
The Pioneers will play next Monday the 28th in a scrimmage against Napa Valley College.
