VALLEJO, Calif. – The PUC Men's Basketball team looked to lock up the third spot in the Cal Pac playoffs with a win against regular season conference champs Cal Maritime. The Pioneers put together their best game of the season led by senior co-captain Kwuan Guerrero (SR/Los Angeles, CA) and junior guard Jayson Marquez (JR/Harlem, NY) and came out with the 77-75 victory.
The Pioneers hit the ground running opening up an 11 point margin early. They continued to play their game, pressing and getting good looks at the basket. They shot 46% in the quarter and 78% from the free throw line. They opened up their largest lead of the game at 13 at the 10:49 mark in the opening half. The Keelhaulers slowly worked their way back into the game bringing the Pioneers' lead to 10, 41-31.
The Pioneers struggled opening the second half. They game up a huge run to the home team and saw themselves down by double digits with 7:36 remaining. The Pioneers switched their defensive gameplan to end the game which made the difference in the game. They held the home team without a field goal for the final 4:32 of the game. The Pioneers found themselves down by one point late in the game after a pair of Keelhauler free throws with the final possession. The ball found its way to Guerrero in the post who kicked it out to Marquez for the game winning three pointer at the top of the key to knock off the regular season champs.
The victory also gives the Pioneers a season sweep of the Keelhaulers for the first time in school history.
Guerrero led the Pioneers, he poured in a career high 25 points and added five rebounds. Marquez added 13 points while LeRoy Anderson (SR/Oakland, CA) and Chad Young (SR/Carson, CA) added 11 points apiece.
The Pioneers will have a week to prepare for the Cal Pac Conference tournament where they will face Benedictine University Mesa.
