REDDING, Calif. – The PUC Men's Basketball team went into Saturday's game against the Simpson University Red Hawks needing just one win to clinch a spot in the CalPac Playoffs. After an unimpressive first half, they stormed back to victory to extend their win streak to three games and lock in a spot in the playoffs for the first time in two years.
After leading by double figures midway through the first half, the Red Hawks made the game interesting with a run that put them ahead by seven points heading into halftime. Led by junior guard Jayson Marquez (JR/Harlem, NY), the PUC offense came storming back in the second half. The Pioneers made defensive adjustments at the half that stopped the Red Hawks offense in its tracks as they out scored the home team 53-38 in the second half. The brilliant second half performance allowed PUC to secure an 88-80 victory.
Marquez led the game in scoring with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals followed by Brandon Franklin (JR/Perris, CA) who added 15 points and six rebounds. Kwuan Guerrero (SR/Los Angeles, CA) added 14 points and five rebounds. LeRoy Anderson (SR/Oakland, CA) chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds and Rae Hubbard (JR/Fairfield, CA) added 10 points.
The 14-6 Pioneers will travel to UC Merced on Saturday and look to extend their win streak to four games.
