REDDING, Calif. – The PUC Women's Basketball team traveled to Redding on Saturday night to take on the Simpson University Red Hawks on their senior night. After yet another strong first quarter, the lady Pioneers were unable to string together four solid quarters of play and fell to the home team 72-53.
The Lady Pioneers put together a great first quarter and jumped out to a 20-15 lead at the end of the period. The second quarter, however, was a different story. The team struggled to find their groove on the offensive end while the Red Hawks flourished. PUC was out scored 26-5 in just the second quarter and took the large deficit into the half.
The Pioneers found their stride in the second half. In the final two quarters, they were only out scored by a total of three points, 28-31, but they were ultimately buried in the hole they dug for themselves earlier in the game.
Celina Ewing (FR/Loma Linda, CA) (14), Natalya Stepanchuk (JR/North Highlands, CA) (13) and Alexis Lyers (SR/Upper Marlboro, MD) (12) all scored in double figures for the Pioneers. The Red Hawks were led by Whitney Rodriguez (21), Esther Wofford (16) and Alyson Rippingham (12).
The Lady Pioneers will travel to UC Merced on Thursday in search of their third CalPac victory.
