ANGWIN, Calif.- With seventeen seconds left on the clock, the Pioneers relinquished their first lead of the game. After a defensive rebound and a crucial 3-pointer made by UAV's Franky Teran, the Pioneers fell 84-85 bringing their record to 11-6 overall and 6-4 Cal Pac.
Midway through the half the Pioneers took control of the game stretching their lead by 16 points. Unfortunately for the Pioneers their momentum didn't last for long, and UAV quickly fought back. Going into the half the Pioneers were up by seven points with the scoreboard set at 40-33.
Struggling to adjust to the new tone of the game, the Pioneers were unable to shut down UAV's press and offense. As a result, the difference in the scoreboard narrowed. The gap dropped to five points with a less than two minutes remaining of the game. Following a personal foul by PUC, UAV went to the line, sinking both free throws, decreasing the Pioneers lead to two. With seconds of the game remaining, off of a defensive rebound UAV's Steve Bush was able to pass the ball to Franky Teran who sunk the three-pointer, giving UAV the win. PUC fans watched heartbroken as reading the final score 84-85.
Key players for UAV were Miles Nolen-Webb with 25 points, two steals, two rebounds, and shooting 100% from the free-throw line. Jacob Bowman also contributed 17 points, two steals, and four rebounds.
PUC's stellar performance was a joint effort from the entire team. The leading scorer for the Pioneers was Jayson Marquez (JR/Harlem, NY) with 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists. The Pioneers look forward to their last home game of the season where they recognize and show their appreciation for their seven seniors. The game is scheduled for 1:00 PM against La Sierra University.
