ANGWIN, Calif.- Still energized from their victory over California State University-Maritime, the Pioneers were able to carry their momentum into Saturday night's game. With a 82-69 win over UC Merced, the Pioneers extended their Cal Pac win streak to five.
Within the first minute of the game the Pioneers had nine points with two back-to-back three-pointers from Rae Hubbard (JR/Fairfield, CA) and one from Chad Young (SR/Carson, CA). The Pioneers rode out their early lead until midway through the first half when the Bobcats went on a 7-0 run, bringing the score 42-38 going into the break.
The second half opened up as a battle and the Bobcats were able to keep within the single digits of the Pioneers. By the final whistle blow the Pioneers had shot over 50% from both the field goal and the three-point range and 78% from the line, equating to their 13-point victory.
The Pioneers ran a balanced offense with muliple contributors. LeRoy Anderson (SR/Oakland, CA) led the way with 16 points, followed by Rae Hubbard adding 14 points. Kwuan Guerrero (SR/Los Angeles, CA) dominated the paint with seven rebounds and 13 points. Devon Pinnock (JR/Harlem, NY) led in assists with seven, while adding ten points of his own.
Matt Laflin led the Bobcats with a double-double, 14 points and ten rebounds.
The Pioneers will hit the raod next week as they travel to Arizona where they will begin round two of league play against Benedictine University at Mesa and Embry-Riddle Univeristy.
