RIVERSIDE, Calif.- The PUC Men's Basketball team traveled to Southern California this weekend to play two games on their first conference road trip. They took on the Pioneers of the University of Antelope Valley on Thursday and the Golden Eagles of La Sierra University on Saturday night.
In their first contest against the UAV Pioneers, PUC started out slowly. They allowed the Pioneers to jump out to an early lead as they fell behind by double digits. They were able to shrink their deficit by the end of the half, as they gave up 38 total points while just scoring 35 of their own. They would keep the game close in the second half as well but were unable to get over the final hump to secure a victory. They would drop the game by just seven points, 90-83.
Four Pioneers scored in double figures for PUC, led by Anthony Adams-Rule Sr. (SR/Kansas City, MO)'s double double with 14 points and a team high 10 rebounds. Devon Pinnock (JR/Harlem, NY) led the team with 25 points while Rae Hubbard (JR/Fairfield, CA) added 11 and Brandon Franklin (JR/Perris, CA) 10.
In their second contest against the Golden Eagles but strong second halves from Ben Jazuk (JR/Vallejo, CA) and Jayson Marquez (JR/Harlem, NY) helped the Pioneers rally from as much as a 15 point deficit to secure a victory. After going into the half down by nine, PUC came out in the second half on a mission. They stepped up their play on both ends of the ball and tied the game midway through the half. They gained a 10 point lead with 6:55 remaining in the game. They would ride that momentum to a 73-69 victory.
Jazuk connected on 6 of 10 three point shots to help him collect 20 points. Marquez also posted 20 points and added seven rebounds and four assists. Devon Pinnock chipped in 10 points to help the squad. Noel Briones (JR/Hayward,CA) worked to earn a team high eight rebounds.
The Pioneers will play their next game on Tuesday, January 10 when they travel to UC Santa Cruz.
