ANGWIN, CA-- The Pioneers were looking to send their seniors off, in their last home game, with a win. Unfortunately, Menlo College had other plans and came away with win, 75-62. Senior Josh Jewett missed his fourth consecutive game with a mild concussion. Leading the way for the Pioneers was Marcus Carter with 13 points.
Before the game, the Pioneers paid tribute to their two graduating seniors (Josh Jewett and Michael Giang) who played in their final home game in their Pioneers career. For Jewett, he would unfortunately have to watch from the bench for the fourth consecutive game. He is awaiting clearance to resume basketball contact after suffering a mild concussion at the end of the Pioneers win over William Jessup last month.
The Pioneers got off to a slow start against Menlo, allowing Menlo to jump out to a 15-4 lead. They missed many wide-open looks, which led to transition baskets for Menlo. Menlo shot extremely well in the game. They shot an astounding 50 percent from the field, 46 percent from three-point range, and 90 percent from the free throw line. Menlo did a good job of doubling Marcus Carter every time he had the ball in the first half, leaving him scoreless. However in the second half, the Pioneers made adjustments and opened up their offense. Marcus Carter started a run for the Pioneers with a couple great defensive plays that led to easy baskets for the Pioneers. However, each time the Pioneers made a run, they were answered with a three pointer from Menlo. Menlo Guard Charunn Jones hit several backbreaking contested threes that kept the game out of reach for the Pioneers. Jones finished 7-of-11 from 3-point range and ended with 23 points.
The Pioneers next game will be on Saturday night. This will be the first of a three road games to end conference play. The Pioneers will need to sweep these games to position themselves going into the conference tournament.
